Director of Joint Staff, South Carolina National Guard
Brig. Gen. Scott Williams is the Director of Joint Staff, South Carolina National Guard in Columbia, S.C. He serves as a senior advisor to the adjutant general of South Carolina on matters of training, manning, and readiness for over 10,500 Army and Air National Guard personnel to accomplish all federal and state missions.
General Williams was commissioned through the ROTC at Georgia Institute of Technology where he earned his bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering. He graduated from undergraduate pilot training in 1986 and is a command pilot with more than 3,985 hours flying military aircraft in PACAF, USAFE, ACC, AETC, and the ANG. He served as an F-16 fighter pilot, instructor pilot and evaluator pilot, and has over 300 combat hours flying missions in Operations Provide Comfort, Deny Flight, Southern Watch, and Iraqi Freedom. General Williams has held several Air Staff positions. At the Pentagon, he was the F-16 Program Element Monitor, Fighter Requirements Branch Chief, and CSAF briefing team chief. At the National Guard Bureau, he served in Fighter Requirements and Acquisitions, Operations Training, as the F-16 Budget Programmer, and the Programs Division Chief.
Prior to assuming his current position, General Williams commanded the 169th Fighter Wing, an F-16 wing which specializes in Suppression/Destruction of Enemy Air Defenses (S/DEAD), and which consists of over 1,350 ANG and Active Duty personnel in an Active Associate construct. In addition, he served as the Base Commander of McEntire Joint National Guard Base. He is the immediate past chairman of the ANG's F-16 Weapon System Council which provides strategic advice to National Guard Bureau senior leadership on ANG F-16 field issues.
